From the President

Dear Old Scholars,

I am writing to invite you to attend our annual reunion at School, which this year is on Saturday 19th May.

As in previous years this coincides with the School’s Friends and Families Day, and is an excellent opportunity to see the School in action. This year you will be able to view the School’s new Junior School as it nears its final completion. You are most welcome to come along at any time during the day and the programme of activities is attached. Our main meeting point will be the Library, so please remember to sign in and wear your badge.

School events, to which you are invited, finish at around 4pm. There will then be tea on the front lawn until the drinks reception at 6pm. We have a delicious menu planned for the reunion dinner and the cost at £25 per head includes wine. Tickets for the dinner must be ordered before 8th May – see enclosed menu and order form. Please apply early as places are strictly limited and the dining hall can only accommodate 100 people.

We very much look forward to having as many Old Scholars as possible back from the 1970, 1975 and 1980 year groups, ie those turning 60, 55 and 50! If you are in these year groups please get in touch with your old school friends and help us make it a night to remember. See the website for more information.

Please do read the information on our website www.oldscholars.com about changes to the subscription arrangements and how we can continue to support the Association and the School through donations. Both need our continuing support.

I very much hope to see you at School on the 19th May.

Regards,

Richard Haw
President 2011 to 2012

Our Speaker: Kate Davies, MA, DPhil

We are extremely honoured that Kate Davies, an Old Scholar from the 1975 Year Group, will be flying all the way from Seattle to be with us on Friends and Families Day, and to talk about sustainability and green issues.

Kate Davies is core faculty in the Center for Creative Change at Antioch University Seattle. She has a doctorate in biochemistry from Oxford University (1981) and an MA in cultural anthropology and social change from the California Institute for Integral Studies (2002).

Kate has worked on environmental quality, health and sustainability for all of her career. In the 1980s, she set up and managed the City of Toronto’s Environmental Protection Office – the first local government environmental office in Canada – and in the 1990s she established and directed a successful environmental policy consulting company which provided services to the Canadian federal government and international agencies.

In 2002, Kate accepted a faculty position at Antioch University Seattle in the graduate program in Environment & Community. In 2007, she became director of its Center for Creative Change and served in this role until 2010. She has also served on the boards or advisory groups of several environmental organizations, including the Collaborative for Health and Environment Washington, the Institute for Children’s Environmental Health, Washington Citizens for Resource Conservation and Washington Toxics Coalition.

Kate has received service and academic awards for her work and has taught at universities in Canada and the UK, as well as the US. She speaks regularly at local, regional and national conferences and is widely published in newspapers, magazines and journals. In 2009, she wrote the final chapter in a book called The Handbook of Sustainability Literacy (UK: Green Books). Her first book will be published in 2012.

Kate was a pupil at Friends’ School from 1968 to 1975 and readily admits that her successful career was inspired by the biological education she received whilst at Friends’ School.
